Neuausrichtung BG Klinikum Hamburg Boberg
The BG Klinikum Hamburg Boberg , Germany's largest rehabilitation clinic, is located in a sensitive transition zone between urban space and a landscape that is valuable in terms of nature conservation. The existing structure, which has grown over decades, no longer meets the functional, structural and energy requirements of a sustainable acute care and rehabilitation hospital with 850 beds. Deficits in accessibility, development, technology, logistics and flexibility rule out conversion during ongoing operations.
The feasibility study identifies a replacement building on the site as the only viable solution. It examines two options in terms of construction site, organisational model and building structure, taking into account building regulations, traffic, landscape conservation, air rescue and operational organisation. The aim is to bundle clinical, nursing and rehabilitation functions in a clearly structured, adaptable building organisation with short distances, close functional proximity and flexible access.
The new building follows the upper edge of the Boberg terraces and mediates the transition from urban to rural space. The central principles of both variants are a two-storey functional base, ward blocks in an H- or three-wing structure, and horizontal corridors that allow light and views.
Option 1 consists of a six-storey structure with three H-shaped ward blocks connected by bridges, ensuring flexibility within the care units. Option 2 develops an eight-storey structure with four three-wing structures, which strengthens the spatial independence of the therapy and rehabilitation areas and allows for a clear separation of the functional areas.
Both variants take the urban location into account: opening the corridors and patient rooms to the south, orientation towards landscape conservation areas, integration of noise protection, supplies and waste disposal, as well as a roof air rescue centre with direct connection to the central emergency room and operating theatre.
The designs create a clinically flexible, functionally efficient and identity-building hospital that supports the synergy of acute medical care, rehabilitation and research. Option 1 emphasises horizontal structure and linear main routes, while option 2 offers greater building depth, extended flexibility and a stronger urban presence.
