Psychiatrie Lüneburg

Centralisation of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy

Two interlocking structures with spacious, green inner courtyards are being built on the site of the disused swimming pool on the western edge of the existing House 48, forming a design and functional unit with it. The 2- to 3-storey new building is clearly oriented towards the historic campus of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. The new building ensemble connects to the existing network of paths via a forecourt and will thus become part of the spacious patient park with its valuable trees.

The campus of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy follows a clearly discernible design principle: 2-3-storey pavilions scattered throughout the park and accessed by winding paths are arranged symmetrically around the central axis between the administration building and the water tower. The symmetry of the complex has been thrown off balance by the large-scale House 48 on the southern edge of the site. In addition, the main entrance of the building, which dates from the 1970s, does not face the campus and is not integrated into the historic network of paths. Instead, it faces the car park and the street ‘Am Wienebütteler Weg’. The new building for four ward units is located directly west of the existing building and gives the building complex a new orientation. With its clearly visible side entrance, it now faces north and connects to the existing campus path network via a green forecourt and a new connecting path. The new building is clearly visible both from the entrance on Wienebütteler Weg and from within the campus thanks to wide view axes. Above all, however, the new orientation towards the campus offers patients seeking recreation the opportunity to make direct use of the spacious gardens.
