Klinikum Ortenau
New construction Ortenau Clinic in Offenburg
The Ortenau Clinic Offenburg forms the north-western edge of the new Holderstock district and at the same time acts as a bridgehead to the open countryside. The terrain, which slopes gently from the Black Forest to the Rhine, offers the opportunity to create an artificial terrain step, the Holderstock Terrace. The functional areas of the hospital can be integrated into this artificial terrain step. This creates a two-storey terrace facing the landscape, which also forms the desired ‘soft transition’ between the Holderstock urban district and the adjacent open landscape. At the extension of the central access axis, Lise-Meitner-Straße, and at the end points of the main cross streets, there are connection points for cyclists and pedestrians to the adjacent landscape. On Campusplatz, the new clinic is a 3-5-storey building ensemble. A single-storey arcade welcomes patients, visitors and staff and forms a friendly entrance to the building.
The new hospital building consists of a base building with the examination and treatment areas on the ground and first floors, and 3-4-storey ward blocks with various care stations above. In the first construction phase, a total of three pavilions, which protrude above the single-storey base building on the campus square, form an exciting building complex. The main entrance is easy to find in the centre. Taking advantage of the natural slope, the -1 level on the west side can be naturally lit. To achieve this, the naturally grown terrain at Campus Square will be raised by about 1.5 m to an elevation of 155 m above sea level. The hospital building thus appears much flatter and blends in well with the adjacent residential development. Just inside the main entrance is the two-storey entrance hall, which connects the ground floor and the basement level. Parallel to the campus square runs the Magistrale, a public walkway that connects all parts of the hospital.
The three pavilions for general care are identical in design. The central nurses' station is located directly at the access core. Additional decentralised service rooms are distributed throughout the entire level to keep the distances for nursing staff as short as possible. The patient rooms face outwards, offering views of the surrounding landscape. The large windows in the patient rooms have a parapet height of approximately 0.50 m. This allows patients to look outside from their beds and provides seating on benches by the window.
All the roofs of the new Ortenau Clinic are intensively landscaped, with the roof of the building base in particular serving as a roof garden for the adjacent nursing wards, geriatric ward and palliative care ward.
