Friedrich-Fröbel-Schule

New construction / extension of the Friedrich Fröbel School in Frankfurt am Main

The linear urban structure, characterised by 4- to 5-storey terraced buildings, and the equally linear design of the 2- to 3-storey school building are perfectly complemented by each other. The school and neighbouring residential buildings also share the immediate, direct connection between high-quality outdoor spaces and indoor spaces. Added to this is the special atmospheric effect of the modest post-war architecture in this special location, which is particularly worth preserving for future generations. For this reason, and also taking into account the aspect of sustainability in the preservation of existing buildings (‘grey energy’), the concept of the present design is based on the strategy of consistently continuing to re-use the existing Friedrich Fröbel School. All “learning houses” are either at ground level or connected directly to the outdoor spaces and gardens via a single staircase.
The new additions to the existing school building are constructed using a hybrid wood and concrete construction method. The façades are characterised by an exciting interplay of closed wall panels with exposed brickwork, white plaster surfaces and glass in the existing buildings, and cladding with reddish larch wood louvres and appropriately sized glass panels in the new additions.
