Two workshop buildings, together with the existing school buildings, define the central forum of the Regional Education Centre. The Schützenpark Forum, together with the adjacent work yard, serves as a representative, high-profile ‘showcase’ for the skilled trades, helping to motivate young people to learn a trade. Together with the new community school, the sports hall and the central parking garage, the forum marks the beginning of the future development of the ‘Schützenpark Education Campus’ in Kiel. The two-storey timber-frame buildings with their exposed supporting structure and equally visible building services are functional, purpose-built structures and, in addition, easily understandable visual aids for students training in the building trades.
Urban planning and programmatic reasons have led to two separate workshops with a total of five areas of use. The northern workshop I offers teaching and training rooms for the bricklaying, carpentry and joinery training courses, while the southern workshop II houses the rooms for painters and varnishers. The degree of technical installation and dust sensitivity in particular argue in favour of separating the two halls. The workshop for painters and varnishers is highly equipped with an attached paint laboratory, technical rooms and a room for compression and filter technology. The wood dust in the construction technology, carpentry and joinery areas would greatly interfere with the work of the painters and varnishers.
The two-storey, weather-protected entrance areas of the two halls face each other and are clearly connected via the shared forum area. The workshops on the ground floor, which require direct access to the outside, are arranged opposite each other and are related to each other. In Workshop Hall I, students can use the carpentry workshop and the construction workshop with their respective outdoor areas directly in front of them on the ground floor and communicate with their classmates in the ‘open’ varnishers’ workshop across the forum.
