Campus Klinik Arlesheim

Replacement building for Haus Wegman

Linear building structures, offset from one another and connected by transparent bridges, divide the clinic campus into easily usable, gently terraced outdoor spaces that follow the topography of the site. They connect the south-west and north-east sides of the patient park and refer to the area of the Lukas Clinic. The architecture and garden form an exciting relationship, and the structural design of the new clinic building is easily expandable.

The rhythmic sequence of four linear, three-storey structures fits well into the small-scale development structure of Arlesheim's town centre. The front sides of the building blocks, which dominate the urban space, reflect the scale of the typical local buildings. The impression of a large-scale urban form is deliberately avoided. The very high density desired by the client, with the corresponding space requirements, can be achieved, especially when the second stage is taken into consideration. The buildings, which open up like a fan towards the landscape, create surprising visual connections across the axis of the existing campus. They open up wide views of the scenic landscape of the Basel countryside. The existing, painful division of the campus into two parts by the long, hermetically sealed existing building of the clinic will be eliminated in the future. The ‘mantel line’ specified in the neighbourhood plan with the binding building heights will be adhered to.
