Schlosstheater in Moers

Extension and reconstruction of the White House into the New Schlosstheater

The largely freestanding White House will become an icon of the Schlosstheater Moers. Despite the substantial volume of the new theatre building, the finely balanced urban setting at the heart of the Kastell is strengthened. With its dark, pre-weathered timber façade, the STM extension deliberately takes a back seat to the white historic building. Following the natural slope of the site at the edge of the Schlosspark, it is set at a lower level and remains below the historic building’s eaves. The slight rotation of the auditorium opens up views from the Schlossplatz towards the adjacent Schlosspark. The new auditorium makes it possible to incorporate the urban space at the Kastell into productions by the STM, turning it into a stage for city life. Upward-folding shutters and sliding windows allow the auditorium to open fully towards the Kastell. For special events, such as the annual Moers Festival, the Schlossplatz becomes part of the audience area of the new STM, with tiered seating following the sloping terrain.
