Nibelungenhalle Walldürn
Replacement Building for the Nibelungenhalle in Walldürn
Taking into account the preservation of key elements of the existing structure, the new event hall stands as the ‘crown’ of Walldürn. The new main entrance and the adjacent town square are oriented towards the entrances to the swimming pool and the Konrad-von-Dürn Secondary School and can be experienced from the town centre without causing noise pollution for local residents. In this way, the new Nibelungenhalle can continue to play a central role in the urban life of Walldürn.
Reusing existing buildings rather than demolishing them is a contemporary response to the construction industry’s high carbon footprint. The Nibelungenhalle offers the opportunity to utilise the existing ‘grey energy’ of the supporting structure whilst still constructing a modern, contemporary sports and multi-purpose hall.
The design is based on retaining key parts of the supporting structure, as well as the grandstand, which will be connected to the foyer with barrier-free access in future. The new Nibelungenhalle is organised on a single storey and, like the existing building, has no basement.
