BIMSB Laborgebäude

Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology, new construction

The terraced research building marks the new entrance to the North Campus on Hannoversche Strasse. The surprising spaciousness of the large block's expansive interior can be experienced immediately upon entering. Generous roof gardens and loggias on all levels of the research building offer recreational areas and communication opportunities for researchers, as well as picturesque views of Berlin-Mitte.

Typologically, the new laboratory building is an intensively gardened terraced house with a centrally located access core. The building steps down from a 6-storey high point via several terraced sections to level -1. The laboratory areas below the garden level are oriented towards and illuminated by spacious inner courtyards. The arrangement of the base floor at level -1 allows for a small-scale and stepped structure of the above-ground building volume. The building fits precisely into the required space requirements. The new building consists of overlapping cubes that form ideal room layouts for the desired working environments of an innovative research building. Continuous bands of windows, in combination with the generous floor height of 4.0 m and correspondingly high windows, bring plenty of light into the interior spaces. At the same time, the views from the workplaces open up onto the campus.
