Zwischen Lurzenhof und Auloh

Urban design project ‘Between Lurzenhof and Auloh’ in Landshut

Pentagonal residential courtyards with a variety of different apartment types offer to diverse groups of residents flexible living space, protected communal open spaces and integrate the new quarter with the surrounding landscape. The connection to the existing town centre around the church of Auloh with the adjacent cemetery is achieved by placing a few solitary buildings that are orthogonal to the extended Konradin primary school and the kindergarten and mark a neighbourhood square located at the interface between the existing centre of Auloh and the new residential quarter. The 3- to 7-storey residential buildings, which vary significantly in height, are modular in design and conceived as timber constructions with coloured wooden façades.

The new residential quarter is characterised by its urbanity and distinctive atmosphere. With its high density, it complements the ‘Auloh’ residential area, which is characterised by detached houses, semi-detached houses and smaller multi-storey apartment buildings. The percentage split between subsidised and privately financed housing of 35% to 65% specified in the competition brief is achieved in each of the pentagons. The desired social mix around a communal courtyard promotes social responsibility for neighbours within the courtyard community and offers the opportunity for diverse social contacts in the lively community. This idea is supported by the mix of large and small flats. The required proportion of 10% barrier-free flats in subsidised housing for people with disabilities and senior citizens is distributed across all pentagons. The modular floor plans of the residential buildings allow individual rooms or modules to be added to or subtracted from the individual flats.
There are basically three different types of flats: 1. flats with open gallery access, 2. flats with central staircases, and 3. townhouses with multi-storey flats.
