Zentrum Seelische Gesundheit

The four-storey Centre for Mental Health is connected to the new Flugfeld Clinic and forms a striking entrance to Parkstadt-West from the west via Flugfeldallee. The Z-shaped structure forms an effective protective shield to the north-west towards Flugfeldallee, the A81 motorway and the noisy test track of the Daimler Benz car factory. This creates usable and quiet open spaces for patients and staff, which open up to the park on the lake promenade on one side and to the sun on the south side on the other. The new Centre for Mental Health also seeks to establish a close connection to the somatic departments of the Flugfeld Clinic through the use of materials such as yellow-grey brick and wood.

The special Z-shape of the building allows for the protected arrangement of all patient rooms and common areas in an east or west orientation, behind the ‘protective shield’ of the ‘west wing’ described above. The sensitive patient areas are therefore located within the central U-shaped section of the building, which faces the somewhat quieter part of the park. The outpatient areas, day clinics and diagnostics are housed in the protective west wing of the building. The rooms facing west, in particular the rooms for patients (day clinic), are fitted with special box windows with external shock-absorbing panels to protect against direct noise emissions. All areas of the new building can be accessed on the ground floor via a naturally lit corridor/main corridor.
The new clinic is designed as a reinforced concrete skeleton structure on a 7.50 m grid. The floor height is 4.50 m in the base area on the ground floor and on level -1, and 3.50 m on the wards above. The exterior is enclosed by a façade of yellow-grey bricks. The materiality of the façade links the new building of the Centre for Mental Health to the Flugfeldklinikum.
