New Construction Parasitology Building – Leipzig University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Leipzig

The new Parasitology Building extends the veterinary medicine campus of Leipzig University to the south. With its spacious arcade, the three-storey brick building clearly marks the new southern entrance. At the same time, it forms a strong counterpart to the new building of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy on Zwickauer Strasse. Both buildings form the gateway to the expanded biology research location in Leipzig.

Zwickauer Strasse connects the new quarter to the historic veterinary medicine campus in the west and the newly emerging ‘Bio City Leipzig’ with various life science research institutions in the east. Together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy, the new parasitology building marks a contemporary start to the new science quarter in the north. At the same time, it also sets a strong initial tone for the further development of the old Leipzig trade fair grounds as a location for higher education and science in the south. The new building forms the spatial edge specified in the 2015 urban development framework plan for the street ‘An den Tierkliniken’ in the south and Zwickauer Straße in the south-west. This clearly defines the sensitive block corner at the southern tip of the veterinary medicine campus for the future. At the same time, a public open space is being created to the west of the new building in the area of trees worthy of preservation, which will develop into the spacious entrance to the veterinary medicine campus.
The three-storey new building for parasitology is functionally divided vertically into animal holding on the ground floor and laboratories on the first floor. Teaching and training extend across both levels. The building services are located in the basement and on the cantilevered second floor. The institute management's office is located directly at the entrance on the ground floor and can therefore be used as a reception area for the research building. Students, teachers and visitors can find contact persons here. A representative, easily accessible staircase leads to the upper floor.
