Sportforum am Schlaatz

The large urban development ‘Am Schlaatz’ frames the Nuthepark with adjacent diverse public functions as a forum for social infrastructure. This includes community centres, schools, kindergartens, an integration garden and extensive sports grounds. The new sports forum plays a central role in school sports, popular sports, competitive sports and individual leisure activities. The green roof, which can be used for recreational purposes, promotes the integration of the large building into the central park of the large housing estate, and residents also have access to the built-up area as an intensively usable park area.

The new building develops from the river landscape, with the ‘highlight’ of the Nuthe river returning to its natural bed as its starting point. The natural meadows directly adjacent to the river are located at a low elevation of +31.50 m above sea level and can therefore be flooded during high water. Both the adjacent outdoor sports areas and the new sports forum are located on a level that is approximately 1.0 m higher and are thus largely protected against flooding. The artificially raised levels are an essential feature of the ‘Am Schlaatz’ district, which can be felt throughout Nuthepark. The new sports forum rises about 5.0 m above the surrounding river landscape and is perceived as part of the park's topography. The green roof, which is accessible from Nuthepark to all visitors, forms a new, prominent public space in the park.

The floating attic made of precast concrete elements above large-format glass elements defines the appearance of the simple façade. The staggered roof line marks the entrances and access points to the roof, creating variety and breaking up the regularity. Inside, subtle material gradations create orientation and atmosphere in the individual sports areas. The impact walls and the integrated sanitary/storage cubes are clad with wood-based panels, which contrast attractively with the quality of the exposed concrete construction. Individual colour accents facilitate orientation for athletes and fans.
