Three compact three-storey buildings form a neighbourhood square on Smiterlowstraße. The result is an attractive meeting place for residents and users of the care facility as well as for local residents and visitors to the community centre. The public square brings together the entrances to the various facilities, outpatient and inpatient care, barrier-free living and the community centre. Spacious, easily accessible gardens in the sheltered inner courtyard offer recreational and relaxation areas for the diverse user groups of the care and community centre. The foyer with its public café acts as a bridge on the ground floor, providing visual connections between Smiterlowstraße and the garden.

The main entrance to the new nursing home and community centre building is located directly on the neighbourhood square on Smiterlowstraße, approximately in the middle of the structure. A central staircase adjacent to the entrance area and two secondary staircases provide access to the new building. The care areas are divided into a total of five modules, each with around 13 residents, with each module having a central living area with a terrace and ancillary rooms, such as clean and non-clean workrooms, as well as support areas and lounges for the nursing staff.

The new building will be constructed using a monolithic construction method with Poroton masonry and a plaster façade. The advantage of this traditional and cost-effective construction method is that the plaster can be applied directly to the masonry. This eliminates the need for a composite thermal insulation system with its well-known structural and building physics problems. The three-storey shell will be constructed as a central wall structure with load-bearing corridor walls. This means that the partition walls between the individual patient rooms can be constructed as non-load-bearing walls, also in Poroton. Subsequent adjustments to the size and number of rooms are therefore possible. The building can be easily adapted to different user requirements in the future.
