Modulare Grundschule Berlin
New construction of a module-based primary school with four classrooms and a sports hall
The three-storey primary school module, together with the one- to two-storey sports hall modules, forms an exciting building ensemble that fits in well with the six different locations in Berlin. The trinity of modular structures blends in with the existing exciting urban spaces and creates diverse and usable outdoor areas. The pergola acts as a passe-partout, adapting the modular buildings to the different locations. In combination with the buildings, it frames the gardens and open spaces, creating memorable and recognisable learning environments.
The identical spatial programme makes it possible to construct the six modular primary schools following the same principle. Two buildings arranged offset from each other with inner courtyards form the basic structure of the school buildings. The interplay with the different basic structures of the sports halls creates surprisingly diverse spatial situations that are never uniform or boring. The adaptation of this “trinity” to the respective urban situations is also supported by the colour concept of the façades made of ceramic bars of different lengths. All colours appear in the different façades, but with varying intensity and frequency. Thus, the colours connect the individual school locations and form a (colour) family.
From the entrance of the school building, there is a view of the ‘assembly hall’ and the multi-purpose room behind it. This central room receives natural light from above via skylights and serves as a canteen during the school day. On each of the two upper floors, there are two identically constructed compartments on one level. The main and division group rooms form an L-shape around the communal forum, which receives natural light via the inner courtyard.
The shell is constructed as a modular, expandable skeleton made of square precast reinforced concrete columns and prefabricated steel composite beams spanning between them at ceiling level. The ceiling construction is a wood-concrete composite structure.
