Hospitalquartier Biberach

The new construction of the Biberach care and community centre in the heart of the Hospital district connects the existing buildings on the campus and creates exciting, highly practical outdoor spaces. The organic shape of the building opens up the middle of the campus to the town of Biberach and points to the scenic view of the steeple of St. Martin's parish church. The Hospital Quarter in Biberach has an open building structure characterised by intensively used outdoor spaces. Viewed from the surrounding streets, the ‘Der Hospital’ campus looks like a spacious park that offers a wide range of recreational opportunities to the residents and users of the quarter. The demolition of the existing building adjacent to the new ILW building offers a unique opportunity to strengthen the public character of the hospital quarter, which is characterised by a variety of paths and views. The compact 5-storey timber construction becomes part of the garden with its friendly and warm design.

The usable space is divided into 4 clearly defined units per level, which rotate around a common centre, the access hall in the middle of the building. This floor plan design avoids corridors and thus supports the orientation of older residents. Large windows bring plenty of light into the centre of the building, creating sunny meeting places for neighbours to chat with sweeping views of the surrounding gardens. A central staircase directly adjacent to the entrance area provides access to the new building.

The five-storey structure is being built as a semi-modular reinforced concrete and timber hybrid construction. This cost-effective construction method uses local building materials, shortens the construction time and reduces construction noise for the residents of the adjacent care facilities. Sustainably sourced timber elements in the façades and interior fittings create a high-quality living environment.
