Evangelisches Waldkrankenhaus
day care surgery centre
A day care surgery centre is being integrated into Building 20 on the campus of the “Evangelisches Waldkrankenhaus”. This is in response to changes in the healthcare system and to relieve pressure on the inpatient surgery department.
Building 20, a simple brick structure from the 1960s with load-bearing central walls, is set among precious old trees. The main focus is on creating a striking and highly visible address for the busy day care surgery centre. The new ramp building at the front, together with the skylight in the entrance hall and the far-reaching light tower, creates the desired attractive atmosphere. New two-storey spaces give the building an appropriate scale. Generous glazing at strategic locations focuses the interior on the surrounding tall pine and leaf trees.
The slender canopy welcomes patients, visitors and staff with an inviting gesture and accompanies them, protected from the weather, down a gently sloping ramp into the building.
Via a compact reception area with a registration desk, patients enter the two-storey entrance hall of the day care surgery centre. The façade cut-outs zoom in on tree trunks and treetops like a camera. From the central nurses' station, all sensitive areas of the surgical centre can be effectively viewed and monitored.
The new day care surgery centre has two fully equipped operating theatres and a treatment room, which can be converted into an additional third operating theatre if required. Windows with views of the surrounding woods create a pleasant atmosphere in the theatre.
