Deutsche Botschaft Nikosia

German Embassy Nicosia Cyprus, new construction

The new German Embassy in Nicosia is a compact five-storey cube constructed from sandstone typical of Cyprus. Generous façade openings are fronted by loggias, which form an appropriate transition from the interior to the exterior and at the same time provide a natural buffer for summer heat protection. The outdoor facilities are divided into areas for intensive use: to the west is the
formal entrance plaza, to the north and east are the parking spaces under a shady canopy of trees, and to the south is the green tip of the property, which extends far into the street.

The almost cube-shaped structure is divided by spacious loggias at the corners of the building, which act as large windows to the city. The new German embassy thus presents itself as open and inviting. Large closed wall surfaces with incised vertically arranged windows contrast with the loggias, some of which are multi-storey. They form a natural buffer between the interior and exterior and, like a layered façade, provide structural sun protection.

Although the plot is cramped due to its exposed location and the road layout, the centrally positioned structure of the new embassy divides it into easily usable outdoor areas. Via the security gate in the outer guardhouse on the western boundary of the property, visitors can either go straight ahead to the visa office through separate entrances or make their way across the representative forecourt
to the main entrance of the chancellery building.
