Center for Ecoefficient Materials & Technologies
EcoMaT, new construction in Bremen
The EcoMaT research and technology centre was built in Bremen's Airportcity district to bring together the city's existing expertise in materials technology and lightweight construction from the commercial and scientific sectors. The new building presents itself as a restrained, clearly structured urban block and, at the same time, as an open, linear building structure for researching new materials.
The façade consists of vertical, wing-shaped aluminium lamellas, which give the building an almost immaterial and - in tune with the research topic of “lightweight construction” – a weightless appearance.
The design follows the essential specifications of the urban development concept for the airport city and incorporates the small-scale nature of this urban design. The new laboratory building is rather modest and, despite its size, presents itself as a functional urban building block.
The new research centre is vertically divided into a two-storey base consisting of laboratories and two office floors above. The compact base of the building is divided by two striking green inner courtyards, which ensure optimal light and air conditions inside the building. The linear arrangement of the room layout and the large laboratory halls located parallel to each other result in short distances and a high level of functionality in the new building.
