Abgeordnetenhaus von Berlin
Extension of parliamentary parties' offices
The Berlin House of Representatives was to be extended to provide additional office and meeting rooms for the parliamentarians of the parliamentary parties. To this end, the slightly sloping roof areas facing the inner courtyards were extended. The intervention in the historic building, which was converted into a modern parliament in the early 1990s, was to be carried out as carefully as possible. The extension was integrated into the existing roof landscape with its low roof pitches. The extension is secondary to the imposing attic of the existing building and is therefore almost invisible. The resulting low ceiling height of the offices is compensated for by skylights.
The newly gained space is enclosed by cladding made of horizontally arranged anodised aluminium rectangular profiles and flush-mounted windows, which, like a cockpit, open up views of the silhouette of the neighbouring Potsdamer Platz and the expanse of the ‘sky above Berlin’.
